&lt;p&gt;The prizes at regional Asian ad awards &lt;a href="http://www.adfest.com/" class="body" target="_blank"&gt;AdFest&lt;/a&gt; have finally been announced—four months late—and Uniqlo and JWT are the top winners.    &lt;/p&gt;      &lt;p&gt;  The Japanese clothing retailer and its agency, local Tokyo shop IMG SRC, picked up the Grande Innova Lotus for Uniqlo’s “Lucky Switch” campaign, which embeds a branded widget on blogs and websites, converting every image on any site into Uniqlo lucky tickets as soon as the user flips the virtual switch.   &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;    “Lucky Switch” is a “unique integrated idea that enables Uniqlo to put their brand on other people’s sites, which is quite cheeky,” said Brett Mitchell, digital director at Droga5, Sydney, and president of this year’s Cyber Lotus jury. The campaign also won the Best of Cyber Lotus.  &lt;/p&gt;      &lt;p&gt;    Three other agencies walked away with Innova Lotuses this year—Bartle Bogle Hegarty, Shanghai for WWF’s “Fate’s in Your Hands” campaign; Projector in Tokyo for a Uniqlo calendar; and Beacon Communications, Tokyo for Yubari City Project, which helped revive a debt-ridden Japanese city. The Innova category is judged by all the other jury presidents and rewards innovation.  &lt;/p&gt;    &lt;p&gt;  &lt;a href="http://www.uniqlo.com/calendar/" class="body" target="_blank"&gt;  			&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Asia’s premier advertising festival, held every March in Thailand in Pattaya, a two-hour drive south of Bangkok, was first postponed until late May and finally cancelled, due to Thailand’s political turmoil earlier this year.  &lt;/p&gt;        &lt;p&gt;  The judging was rescheduled for late May in Tokyo, then postponed again when foreign consulates in Bangkok closed, making it impossible for AdFest organizers to get visas to enter Japan.  &lt;/p&gt;        &lt;p&gt;  More than 50 advertising executives finally gathered in Tokyo last week to judge the 2010 AdFest Lotus Awards, marking the biggest international advertising event ever held there.     &lt;/p&gt;      &lt;p&gt;  The global recession took a toll on creativity in Asia as well as entry numbers. The 13-year-old festival received 2,708 entries this year, down from 3,309 last year and an all-time high of 5,148 in 2008. Tokyo agencies sent the most entries—417—followed by Bangkok with 382 and Mumbai at 356.  &lt;/p&gt;      &lt;p&gt;    Thailand’s political problems and the recession’s impact on award shows aren’t AdFest’s only challenges. The festival faces increasing competition from Asia’s other major regional festival, Spikes Asia, held each fall in Singapore with support from the organizers of the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.  And yet another festival, the Global Advertising Awards, is making plans to launch in April 2011, right after AdFest, and in the same country, on the Thai island of Phuket. According to the organizers, who claim backing from the Thai government and Singha beer, more information will be available on &lt;a href="http://www.theglobaladvertisingawards.com" class="body" target="_blank"&gt;the website&lt;/a&gt; in September.  &lt;/p&gt;      &lt;p&gt;    But the challenges facing AdFest didn’t dampen enthusiasm among the judges.  &lt;/p&gt;        &lt;p&gt;  Grand Jury President Steve Henry said he was inspired by the experimentation taking place in Asia. “It’s been a difficult time for creativity generally for various reasons thanks to weaker financial conditions and changes in the media marketplace.”  &lt;/p&gt;      &lt;p&gt;    Certainly in London, Mr. Henry said, “There seems to be low morale within advertising agencies at the moment and yet here in Asia there seems to be more confidence and experimentation.”   &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;div class="posterous_bookmarklet_entry"&gt; If you’re looking to reach upholders of traditional American values, your best bet might be the Hispanic market.&lt;p&gt;&lt;br/&gt;    The market is growing: The 2010 Census expected to count a record 50 million Hispanics, or one in every six U.S. residents, meaning the Hispanic population will have increased a stunning 42% from the previous census in 2000. (By comparison, the non-Hispanic population will have edged up just 5% in that decade.) It’s also got scale: Hispanics are now the nation’s second-largest consumer market after white non-Hispanics, who are still the largest group at about 200 million.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;    But perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Hispanics in America is how closely they exemplify our idealized concept of 1950s America. &lt;p&gt;    That’s because, for the first time ever, Ford is bucking with tradition and turning to the web — with Facebook as the platform — to exhibit its latest vehicle.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;    Ford has been using the Ford Explorer Facebook Page to drum up excitement in anticipation of the all-day event. The automaker has already far surpassed its goal of 30,000 fans prior to the reveal, which means the the company will be giving away an Explorer to one random fan. Now, all that remains is a web-wide media blitz, the likes of which is designed to make a big enough splash to reach more than 50 million people.&lt;/p&gt;

Media sponsorships are another avenue for promotion with most going to prominent print publications and some online pubs. Rarely if ever, is an agency allowed to be a media sponsor unless their blog or newsletter is highly visible and relevant.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;strong&gt;Frontline Staff &lt;/strong&gt;- Answering the phone, speaking to prospects in meetings, networking online and offline, front line staff behavior can have leave a big impression (good or bad) on potential clients. Account Management and Client Services staff that work with existing customers also have a big impact on word of mouth between clients and the other companies they might refer the agency’s services to.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;

Packing smart phones that is, equipped with cameras, livestreaming video, Twitter and Facebook. Why some companies actually promote irreverent behavior of employees, I don’t really know. In fact, some agencies might even take seemingly blase photos and make them seem somewhat irreverent in the name of “humor”. Without context, such images can be as damaging to a brand as if they were true.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;strong&gt;Search Engine Visibility on Competitive Industry Terms&lt;/strong&gt; – I can’t tell you how many times companies have said, “We found you on Google by searching for (insert industry term here) and we figured if you can do it for yourself, you can probably do it for us.” I know, I know. There’s so much wrong with that kind of ranking logic these days, but it’s a fact of life in the search biz. Search engine visibility is a form of public relations and showing up for relevant, broad terms (as well as your niche specialties) makes your brand name (if your Title tags are written properly) associated with those terms.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;strong&gt;Brand – Message, Identity, Logo&lt;/strong&gt; – There’s a lot that goes into creating a brand. I like the definition: “A brand is a promise kept”. Each interaction between a prospective company and something that communicates information about the agency is an opportunity to make a brand promise. Repeat interactions provide the opportunity to keep that promise. Thoughtful messaging and a well designed logo also convey important messages that evoke feelings which can either build or detract from credibility.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;strong&gt;Press Releases&lt;/strong&gt; – Sending out non-news press releases, “We just moved to a new building” or “We launched a new web site design”, is worse than not sending any press releases at all. But sending out press releases to wire services and directly to cultivated lists of relevant industry publications sends signals of your credibility. And with clever pitching, they might even get you some press coverage.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;strong&gt;Research Published&lt;/strong&gt; – In the same way that faculty at Universities gain prominence and reputation by publishing research in professional journals, companies that have the insight and resources to conduct real research and publish their findings create very strong signals of credibility. It is not only the execution of such research that makes it an effective “signal” though. The intelligent promotion of these learnings is as much or more important.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Industry Association Involvement&lt;/strong&gt; – Investing in the future of the overall industry through association involvement can give the impression that a company has a higher level commitment than those that are not involved. Being involved with setting industry standards, guidelines and even training programs can set an agency apart and give an indication of their expertise.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;The Agency’s Offices&lt;/strong&gt; – While many internet marketing agencies operate virtually, most maintain physical offices. Depending on the manner in which the agency pitches potential clients, those offices can give an impression of the agency’s style, personality and health.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Word on the Street, Buzz, Word of Mouth&lt;/strong&gt; – First and foremost, doing good work is the cornerstone of building positive word of mouth. At the same time, successfully engaging the tactics on this list will build positive buzz, but the longevity of that buzz is only sustainable if the agency has something significant in it’s ability to deliver results, to back it up. There is such a thing as over-marketing and people are smart enough to realize that one company can’t do everything. Making it easy for clients to pass on the good news or making sure testimonials are properly promoted can extend a company’s reach with nominal marketing investment.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Being Included on Industry “Lists” of Top Agencies&lt;/strong&gt; – No matter how you slice and dice it, getting included on a list sends a signal. Lists are inherently controversial because getting included means others are excluded. If you know how to create and promote the right signals, like doing great work for clients and letting the world know about it, getting on the kinds of lists that build credibility is pretty straightforward. Leaving it to chance and expecting inclusion based purely on merit is flat out naive.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
